Question I just read that Microsoft invested 3 billion dollars in the online gaming industry. Why would they do that just for XboX? Can they make money off Xbox in other lines of business or something?

This question is a bit more related to my area of expertise. The most likely reason for MS investment is that this is a valuable source of current and potential income. Various sources note that the gaming industry generates more dollars than the movie industry. If MS can take a slice of this cake by selling games (and the licences to develop games for its console) then it will be doing pretty good for itself.
