Internet Media - What is the difference between a column and a blog?
Expert: Edina Hodos - 8/12/2009
Question What is the difference between a column and a blog?
I worked in a small newspaper outside of the U.S.A. Our newspaper plans to open some blogs for our writers; however, we still have a debate: What are the differences between a column and a blog?
For example, are those New York Times' columns (by Paul Krugman, Thomas L. Friedman) also "blogs" by another name? Especially when you read them on the NYT website, where readers can easily leave their comments.
Thank you for your clarification.
Answer Hi Le
My apologies for taking so long to answer you.
There are several differences between a column and a blog. The main one is that blog is Interactive, where as column is intended to merely inform your readers.
What a blog can do vs. What a column can do
* involves your readers via comments * Tells your readers the information in a condensed format
* daily blog updates keeps your site fresh * can be archived for time relevant searches
* purposely use high density keywords
for search engines * geared toward the reader with less SEO
* can be used to develop community via involvement * provides one dimensional information
* usually uses a more casual tone * usually written in more formal tone
When deciding which method to use, I would suggest starting at the root. ~What do you hope to achieve? and What does your target market need, and perceive as value? ~
I hope this was helpful, an honest review is appreciated.
