Question
Dear Denis,

Can the instant messaging facility from Lotus Notes series be decoded or subject to any surveillance by other people or by system administrator ? Are the conversations registered and archived ?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Cristian.

I did not realize this question in my pending questions. Sorry for responding so late. I've never done this kind of decode, but I know this:

Instant messaging networks provide the ability to transfer text messages and to share or transfer files. Consequently, instant messengers can be a source of information leaks or transfer worms and other malware. Instant messengers can also provide an access point for backdoor Trojan horses.
Hackers can use instant messaging to gain backdoor access to computers without opening a listening port, effectively bypassing desktop and perimeter firewall implementations.
Through third party solution, someone or an administrator can capture IM information even without the need of decoding, but only filtering.

This is not quite usual, but depending on the company's policies an administrator can use this. Again, this is not a native solution Notes.

Best regards.
Vinny!
