Internet/Network Security - Problem with website

Expert: Daniel Fredriksen - 10/21/2009

Question
This is very strange because my sons name is Ryan Stewart!

I do know a good bit about computers, but cant seem to get this one answered. I have a laptop I use and I started playing on some gaming sites. Well, others in my house want their own accounts, but the website recognizes us and shuts it down. We are not trying to do anything wrong just have more than one account. I wondered if you know what I need to do so they dont recognize me. How are they linking the accounts? Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Liz, the site is probably keeping track of you using two methods- cookies and your IP address. The cookie method can easily be circumventing by clearing your cookies and closing your browser window before logging in as another user. The IP address method requires that you use seperate connections or have a connection that gives you a fresh IP address every time you connect such as a dialup(cable does not do this). Before you try to circumvent their system though, you should read their terms of service. If they explicity only allow one account per household, then you very well may be trying to do something wrong.

Thanks
