Internet/Network Security - How to limit a tenants internet and block sites?
Expert: Denis Mello - 10/28/2009
Question Hello, my dad has two tenants from a school who use his internet but they download movies. how can he limit their internet speed and block certain websites from his own computer? Is their like a certain progrom needed? Thankyou
Answer Hi Thamid.
He can do it by several ways. One is to negotiate the mounth amount of megabytes/gigabytes that the provider will allow for use.
But the usual is to use softwares that he will act as an administrator. It all depends on your network topology.
it also depends on where you want to monitor/control your bandwidth.
If you want to control all tennants, then you would put it between your ISP hand off and your Procurve (you haven't shown it, but I'm hoping you have a firewall before your ISP hand-off). This page from their website may help you - http://bandwidthcontroller.com/tour2.html
If you want to limit your dynamic tennants then you would move the bandwidth controller to be before or after your Zyxel firewall.
I've never used bandwidthcontroller so I can't comment on how effective it is. I found the product using Google as it seems to match your requirements.
In case you use a wireless router or similar, you can control the use or restrict some sites directly on the device, since your dad woulbe the administrator. It is only a matter of configuration.

You can configure a mirroring port in your HP switch to mirror traffic to an internet monitoring/filtering product. So you can use the internet monitoring software to limit bandwidth and blocking unwanted traffic.
I recommend you to try "WFilter Enterprise". It allows you to monitor bandwidth, monitor internet usage, block internet access and filter internet traffic from one computer.
Key Features:
* Real time network connections monitoring and alert.
* Real time bandwidth monitoring.
* Keep a detailed record of each web surfing, emails, instant messaging, file downloading.
* Implement a policy to filter internet access during working hours.
* Websites, messengers and p2p file downloading can be blocked to save bandwidth and raise productivity.
* You only need to install WFilter in ONE computer to manage your whole network.
