Internet/Network Security - blocking sites at work

Expert: Daniel Fredriksen - 11/4/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hi:  You may be predisposed to tell me to piss off, but here is my question.  Our IT guy at the Office has installed some kind of basic blocking software that blocks all kinds of sites.  It appears to be without rhyme or reason and annoys me greatly.  Is there any kind of program I can download and install to get around this so I can surf where I want on my lunch break?  I am looking only for tech advice - I know the legal/ethical issues etc.  Is there a basic tech workaround for me on this?  I found this advice here, would downloading this work?:

ANSWER: Site blockers like SonicWall and NetNanny can be annoying. If you are lucky, you might find an "anonymous proxy" site that hasnt been blocked by your company, and be able to navigate through there. Try some of these:

http://proxify.com/
http://anonymouse.org/
http://www.zend2.com/

Some of the sites out there are sponsored by the CIA for the purpose of allowing individuals in countries that censor web content to browse the web freely (albeit illegally).

QUESTION: Yes, I think its Sonicwall installed.  Its just one IT guy for 300 people, and he seems quite pleased with himself that he's done this.  Thank you for the advice - my only question is there is nothing in these sites you suggest that could cause real damage to the company's network, correct?

Answer
Just the occassional popup ad.

An alternative is to setup a VPN at home, connect to that VPN from work, then you will be browsing off of your home network instead of your work network, but that method requires some networking ability.

Be aware that if you are caught violating your company policy you could get into some significant trouble, so be careful.
