I occasionally get from a friend an attachment that is an EML file. When trying to open it, I get that message that I have to have folder options list the extention of the file to open it.
Problem is, folder options DOES list EML.
Now, when I forward the email to a friend, he has no problem opening the attachment. My uneducated guess is that I have some security setting on my computer that's preventing the files from opening.
Any idea what the problem could be?
Many thanks,
Steve
Answer Steve,
Files with the .eml extension are created by Microsoft Outlook when a message is saved and is commonly seen as an attachment in your e-mail when someone forwards an email to you. In order to view the contents of the file you will need to associate Outlook or Outlook Express with this file type.
Here's how:
If you're using Windows XP, open up My Documents or My Computer from the start menu and at the top of the window select the menu choice Tools and then Folder Options and click on the File Types tab. In the section marked Registered file types, select EML Outlook Express Mail Message and click Advanced. Highlight the word Open and then click Edit. In the box marked "Application used to perform action" type in "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE" /eml:%1 and then click OK. Once you save your work and reboot your system you should be able to open and view the files.
If you're using Windows Vista, click the Start icon and select Default Programs. Click the "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" option and scroll down the list until you find the .eml extension. Click on .eml then the "Change Program" button at the top. Browse to the .exe file of the email program you use (Outlook or Outlook Express) and click OK. After you're done, close any open windows and reboot your system.
Good luck with everything, I'm always happy to help!
