Internet/Network Security/Home laptop protection

Question
Hello John,

I bought an HP 2000 laptop (Windows 8) last summer. The Norton security subscription that came installed on it ended last night. I uninstalled Norton and turned on Windows Defender.

In order to be fully protected, do I need any antispyware or anti malware or other programs? If Yes, please tell me which ones.

Many thanks for your help.
B.J.

Answer
Absolutely but I can't endorse a single AV product for at least two reasons.  No AV product finds all bugs and securing a system requires multiple steps at multiple tiers.

Virustotal.com shows how several AV programs fare against malware that's been uploaded to their site (http://www.virustotal.com/).  ClamAV (http://www.clamwin.com /) is Open Source and is the most-widely used Open Source AV package for Linux.  ClamAV is a windows port.

If an Operating System vendor can't keep its OS product from being compromised, can it produce an effective Antivirus product?

Before selecting an AV product I recommend creating a non-Administrator account.  The first account created during a Windows install is an account with Administrator permissions.

Hope this helps!
