Question I have installed zone alarm on my computer and have noticed it runs slower is there any tips to make it run faster?
Answer Don't use Zone alarm, McAfee, Norton, PC Cillen, AVG, or anything other than a combination of Avast antivirus home edition and Spybot search and destroy 1.3 with Tea Timer installed (optional durring setup but required for sure security) it won't even put a dent in your speed. Just register Avast for free.
You will need to alter the settings of each of these.
Below is a full description.
Answer: OK here are the first steps:
* Disconnect your computers from the network.
* Uninstall all antivirus, firewall, and spyware stuff from your computers.
NOTE: that with Norton and McAfee it is important to uninstall everything you can without actually uninstalling the main security center "in McAfee" and in Norton just oposite. Uninstall the main component first and choose remove all. Then restart. After this in McAfee remove the security system and restart, in Norton remove all the other anoying products besides Live Update if you have any other systamatic antivirus. If this does not work then you have 2 options for uninstalling.
1. go to start click run and type msconfig. go to services and check hide all microsoft services. Then remove any Norton or Mcafee items by unchecking them. Go to the Start group and look for Norton and McAfee products too by whrere the files are located.
2. Search for and remove each entry from the regestry that has to do with Norton or McAfee.
* Last of all after restarting again install Avast Antivirus and Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 With the Tea Timer checked durring install.
* Open Avast and register it for free. Change the settings by clicking on the eject button and clicking settings so that all the updates are automatic. Click the lightning bolt after hooking the network back up to update the antivirus.
* Open spybot Search and Destroy and do this first.
1. under updates check safer networking 2 for the network you are going to update from. then search for and download updates.
2. click Mode at the top and switch to advanced mode.
3. set the settings to do everything automaticaly and schedule it to run on next start up.
4. click schedule and set it to only work if loged on. Then set it to open (do a scan since you set it automatic) every monday at 10:00 AM.
* Restart the computers.
* allow spybot to do its stuff.
* right click on the i icon in the task bar and click murge with avast icon.
* right click on the avast icon and hit the top option on the menu. Then check to make sure it is set to high.
* update Avast again.
* open Avast and click the eject button again and click schedule boot time scan.
* Set it to ask you what to do or it won't work under advanced optoins.
* Restart the computer.
* Use the number keys to choose options when Avast finds viruses and trojans.
* first try to repair (not repair all)
* then try to deleate (not deleate all)
After the computer boots.
Set the Avast screen saver to scan every 30 minutes or hour or whatever. In the settings for it you can choose the background screensaver that you see during the scan from your normal screensavers.
That is pretty mutch it.
Avast can scan your entire network from any of the computers if you play with it. It is really fun. I like the part about how it can scan for 450,000 files on an average computer where NORTON and MCAFEE scan 45,000. It runs faster and better than any other antivirus. You need spybot because it is the best spyware remover.
