Interracial Relationships - interracial dating:)

Expert: Shotoclay Young - 2/15/2005

Question
Hello! I am doing my senior benchmark on interracial dating and how i think that not agreeing with it is racism. I think that its okay for a person to not be interested in another race but saying its wrong for others is not right. Well I have some questions for you:

Do your parents agree with interracial dating?

Are you interested in all races, Well before you were married :)?
explain

Does the environment around you have an affect on what race you date?

Answer
Hi Tanesha!
Wow, some questions you have... :) Lets see...

>>Do your parents agree with interracial dating?

Well, thats a good question. You see, my older sister was married to a white guy and it took them about 5 years before my parents agreed to that marriage (main arguement being that he is white). However, their marriage did not work out and they've gotten divorced after about 5 years of marriage. They had one son from it and both of my parents are crazy about him (he looks more like his father than his mom). When me and Michael (African American)got together and I let them know that he was black, surprisingly there was no real problem with it. My mom said - hey, whatever, are you happy? When I said - yes, she said, - well, that's all that matters. So I guess now looking back I think my parents had prejudice against interracial dating but have changed their point of view since.

>>Are you interested in all races, Well before you were married :)?

In country where I'm originally from, there are no Black people, only asians and whites, and I've only dated koreans. When I moved to US, I chose to explore my possibilities and have gone out with all races.

>>Does the environment around you have an affect on what race you date?

I'd say yes but not that much. First of all, it would be har to date interracially if you lived in time of slavery, right? Other than that you also have to count in number of other factors, such as demographics, exposure to other cultures/races, social structure, class structure, etc.

I don't believe in looking for interracial dating, but if it so happened that you found a perfect soulmate from ANY race - you hold on to them. You can find other, more flexible environment but you might not find other soulmate.

Hope this helps... :)
