Question
Why do interviewers say the following at the end of the interview: "I'll be calling everyone in the next few days to let them know EITHER way".

I have never had one person EVER call me saying they didn't choose me for a position. I've had this happen on 10 or so interviews over the years.

Why do people say this? Thanks

Answer
Hi Matt,

People really hate to communicate bad news and will do anything to avoid it.  Personally, I hate this and I make it a point to contact people.  Actually, people are shocked when I do call them with rejections.  In one case, I spoke to someone for an hour and gave pointers.  And another time, I was in an interview for 5 mins and said "I'm sorry but you are not fit for this job.", and spent the remainder of the time going through his resume as to the problems I saw.

Unfortunately, I have discovered that even though I make it clear to recruiters to 'please tell them that they are not a match' and they say 'I definately will', I often hear back from people that they never got a call.  In fact, I had a job where I was applying for two positions, and I was offered one, and not another and the recruiter (same guy) would evade the question as to the other position I was passed for.

Sadly, this is very common and you should not take it personally.  There is no real answer.  The only thing you can do is that when you are in that position, remember how you felt and take a moment to let candidates know that you are not interested.

Good luck,

Leigh
