Interviewing Tips - What should I do next

Question
I was a senior sales manager for a large US asset management company in HK, selling to Mainland China clients.  I was laid off last November at the height of the financial crisis.  I bumped into a former colleague from my position with a European asset management company, and he is now the head of institutional sales for European firm2.  He told me that his company was looking for someone to cover China, as the head of China just resigned.  I sent him my resume and he quickly got back to me to say that the CEO of HK wanted to meet with me.  The meeting happened two months ago and it went very well.  After the meeting, as per my friend's recommendation I also wrote a China market analysis for the CEO, as he is European and he just got the responsibility for China. I received an e-mail from the CEO on October 13 to ask me when would be a good time to have a word with me the next day.  We decided on 11:00am the next day, but when I called at that time, he was not available.  I left a message with his secretary and she told me that he was flying out of town in the afternoon.  He called me on his mobile phone on his way to the airport, but I was doing my part-time teaching job, and could not take it.  I called back on his mobile phone as per his voice mail message, but he was boarding the plane.  I e-mail him on Oct. 21st to ask him what I should do and he emailed me back to say that he would call me the next day.  He did not call the next day (Thursday), so I called him on Friday and got a hold of him.  He sounded like he was busy with something and asked me what I had been doing since we last talked, he said they were expanding their China resources and he was going through the motion and he wanted to keep me in the frame.  I said OK, just before I said good bye he asked me whether I was available to take his call in the afternoon.  I said sure, but he did not call either.  What is happening here? Should I still wait for his call

Answer
Dear Nancy:

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do at this point.  I don't like the fact that he said he was "going thru the motions".

If it were me, I would email him one last time, and tell him I realize how busy he is, thus that he is difficult to reach.  I would summarize why you want this job and the highlights of why you should have it.  Ask him when he will be making a decision and what your status is at this point.

Then, continue your job search.  You simply cannot wait around for something that may or may not occur.

Warmly, R. Butler
