Inventing New Products/Inventions - Finding Opportunity

Question
I've been working on creating a tech startup for almost 2 years.  I have a local tech incubator that's willing to embrace and help me grow just about any business idea I come up with (they believe in me and they have a slew of investors that work with people in their program).  More importantly, I've became friends with a very experienced product development/sales guy in the tech field I'm interested in, which is Mobile Resource Management (products that assist companies with fleet management)...

Through this gentleman, I've developed a relationship with a former Chief Technical Officer of a Fortune 500 company who has a network of people that are waiting to fund his next invention...

Both of these gentlemen see how serious and knowledgeable of a business man I am, and have said that they'd consider working on a new business together with me.  The problem is that we're having a hard time figuring out a product that isn't already offered by another player in the industry.

What I'm asking of you is if you know of a methodical way I can dissect the market that will enable me to generate ideas for an innovative product in?  I know you may not be knowledgeable of this specific industry, but do you know a systematic way that can be applied to just about ANY industry that can be used to figure out an innovative product?

Answer
Al,

You know, I do not have a clear answer for you on this matter.  If I were to do this, in any given vertical, I would take a look at all of the technologies out in the market....look at some market research and gauge the trends in the marketplace. My development experience comes from developing ideas/products/technology of others and do not have too much experience coming up with new products of my own.  I can forward your email on to a contact if your want to provide me with your email.  I wish you luck, it is great to have support of an investor/group and have no idea what to use the money for....you are in a great position.

Cheers,

Justin
