Ireland/Drive from Dublin to Killarney

Question
I am going to be spending 8 days in Ireland in October.  I am flying into Dublin Airport and also flying out of Dublin Airport.  I plan on renting a car and staying in South Dublin County for 5 days and then driving to Killarney and staying there for three days.  I plan to drive from Dublin to Killarney on a route where I can see the Rock of Cashel along the way.  My question is: Is it crazy to drive back to Dublin Airport from Killarney?  Should I fly out of Shannon at the end of the trip?  Thank you.  I plan on gradually driving from Dublin to Cashel to Killarney, but coming back I am going straight to Dublin Airport.  DO you know how long this drive may be?  Thanks.

Answer
Sharon,

The drive from Killarney to Dublin Airport will take a minimum of 6 hours. If you encounter traffic (especially on the M50 near Dublin) it could take a lot longer. You did not mention when your flight is so I don't know how crazy your plan is. It is not something I would do.

The drive from Killarney to Shannon Airport will take about 2 hours if you do not get into rush-hour Limerick traffic.

Enjoy Ireland!

I have visited Ireland 50 times since 1973 and know the Emerald Isle like the back of my hand. That`s why everyone calls me the “Ireland Expert”. Besides writing a book about Ireland called “IRELAND DREAM TRIP” - formerly "BEST LITTLE GUIDE TO IRELAND" - (which I update yearly and is now in its 20th edition) I also plan customized itineraries to Ireland for my clients. I really enjoy helping others plan their trips to the Emerald Isle and I love answering thousands of questions at various travel forums dedicated to Ireland. I have a forum at http://www.irelandyes.com...I`ve produced a web site to help people planning a trip to Ireland. "IRELAND YES" can be visited at: www.irelandyes.com...
