Ireland - Limerick Deal
Expert: Hugh O'Rourke - 10/29/2009
Question Hugh, Thanks for your time. My family and I (wife, son 12, daughter 10) are considering visiting Ireland in late February to Early March of next year. I ran across a pretty good deal for USD 499 for flight and 6 nights at the Adare Manor near Limerick. I think this is a good deal, as plane tix normally cost at least this much. I have done some reading and it appears that this area is an up and coming tourist area. Is this a good place for a Family vacation. Is it feasible to make a day trip to Dublin? Realistically what can we expect to spend on eating out for Lunch and Dinner daily? I expect the weather will be cooler and wet,a anything to worry about above that? Last but not least, as I am a soccer (footie) nut, i would like to catch a premier or 1st division game. Is the season running during this time.
Again, Thank you for your time.
Regards, Andy
Answer Dear Andy
Thank you for your interest in Ireland.
If this deal is for real then I would recomend you should buy. I tried to book Adare Manor through Expedia (normally 50% of the ordinary rate) and the cost per adult per night is approx USD 140. When I tried to include children it came up with a "no rooms available" answer.
My experience of Adare Manor is of a prestigious high quality hotel with a level of service which meets very exacting standards.
Limerick is quite central for Tourists between Killarney , the Burren and attractions like Rock of Cashel and and Cahir Castle / Swiss Cottage in County Tipperary. Dolphin watching boat trips are also available
The Irish Rail Train system offers return fares to Dublin from Limerick for about USD 14 per person- This is a special rate which cannot be booked more than 28 days befor e the date of travel. You would need to book before travel as the reduced fare is not always available.

I cannot find the fixture list for soccer in Limerick at the end of Feb / beginning March and I fear there may be no important games at that time.
There are several restaurants available in Adare some quite expensive - even the early bird menu for dinner would cost USD 30 per person_ but there are other option for example Chinese Cuisine where the meal would cost of the order of eighteen. This is without wine where an additional USD 30 per 750cl bottle would bring a good beverage.
If you google "adare restaurants" a selection will surface.
An example is Collins restaurant offering a range of different dishes at prices to suit most tastes from good value bar food to sophisticated expensive dining.
I have not personally visited this eating place but there are good reports on Trip Advisor and the description is in keeping with the general high quality expected in the Adare area.
