Irrigation - shallow well priming

Expert: Jeff Wooten - 9/26/2006

Question
The well is 16' deep and 42" of water in the tube and I can't get it to prime with a pitcher pump or electric. I have filled the pipe and it drains down just as fast as I fill. Any suggestions.

Answer
The well pipe is not holding water for some reason.  If you have a foot valve at the end (bottom) of the well, it may be stuck open or broken.  There are other devices for other types of systems that hold water in the pipe.  YOu propably need to pull the pipe out of the well and check it.
