Islam - Dreaming of dying

Expert: Islamic Scholar - 10/12/2009

Question
Assalaamu Alaikum

I have recently dreamt that I am dying three times. The first time I was shot (I saw the shooter and bullet coming toward me) and upon falling to the ground I recited the kalimah shahaadah and then died. I was pleased that I managed to recite that upon dying and thought I would indeed be placed in Janaat. Then in the dream I realized that I have left my beloved husband and 1 year old son behind and also that I must face punishment in the grave, which I feared. I then begged Allah SWT to give me another chance at life so that I may make up for my shortcomings and not be fearful upon dying and in the dream Allah mercifully gave me that chance and I came back to life. Then, in the dream, I tried to explain to my family the wonderful second chance I'd been given and my father had trouble believeing me but my husband did. At the time I was at a stage where I was not making Salaah regularly and did not wear my scarf. I took the dream literally, as if I had gotten another chance and Alhamdulillah, I have turned my life around and haven't missed one Salaah since.

Shorthly after that I again dreamt that I was dying, this time of swine flu and started making my final requests on earth, namely, asking my husband to take the best care of our son and also telling him that he must remarry and try to be happy without me. I again recited the kalimaah. I didn't die in that dream and recovered from the flu.

Last night I again dreamt that I was shot, this time in the back numerous times and that my husband got abducted by the shooters. Upon falling down at my mothers doorstep I again recited the kalimaah shahaadah made requests. I asked my mother and family to tell my husband he may remarry if I am gone and he must try to be happy. Then, I asked that if my husband also dies, that my sisters and sister in law must decide between them who will take care of our son. Then I decided that it should be my sister-in-law as she is unable to bear children (although she has already adopted one, Alhamdulillah) and request that she take care of him.

Can you explain why I keep dreaming that I am dying? Is it a message from Allah to help me stay on the right path? Could dreaming that I am dying 3 times in the space of two months mean that my time is coming to leave this earth?

Shukran for taking the time to read and respond to my questions. I will make dua for you Insha Allah.

Wasalaam, Rashieda

Answer
WA ALAIKUM ASSALAAM W.B.

You should not worry about - your dream could mean financial success. However, it is important to be punctual with your Salaah and Ibaadat etc. - do not let wealth keep you away from your Islamic duties Inshaa Allaah.
