Question
QUESTION: assalamualaikum,
A friend and i were having drinks earlier. I am a Muslim from Malaysia and was just discussing about Islam with a non Muslim friend. I was presenting my points only to the extent of my knowledge and all there is that i know of Islam. the question which my friend ask which caught me off guard and i humbly apologize to him for a question which i do not know a way of answering so i am seeking your expertise hoping for answer.
from what i have been taught and my understanding all this while has been that if a Muslim were to renounce his or her faith then the punishment is death after all is fail to get him to reconsider his or her actions. my friend's question was, if Islam is so beautiful, then what if someone were to being born a Muslim and being brought up a Muslim still chooses to renounce his belief. wouldn't the situation contradicts the flexibility of Islam. as in one of the verse which i understand, "Let there be no compulsion in religion. For truth shall stand distinct in errors.
I humbly apologize for any faux pas in presenting my question.

ANSWER: Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim (In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful)

Assalmalaikum

Dear Brother,

Islam has answers to all questions as it is the truth.

[Quran 17:81] And say: "Truth has (now) arrived, and Falsehood perished: for Falsehood is (by its nature) bound to perish."

Every Muslim is a soldier of islam. Suppose during a war of Malaysia and China, malaysian soldier defects and joins the chinese forces and somehow he is caught. What do you think, the Malaysian forces will forgive him or immediately kill him ??

QUESTION: assalamualaikum,
but then the thing they're saying is the phrase "Let there be no compulsion to religion is only for those who was never a Muslim. but when someone is a Muslim he is not allowed to choose. how come Muslims claim that Islam is flexible and fair?

ANSWER: [Baqara 2:256] Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah/God has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah/God hear's and know's all things.

[Baqara 2:257] Allah/God is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject faith the patrons are the evil ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will b e companions of the fire, to dwell therein (For ever).

Once a person enters Islam, he enters a contract with Allah/God to obey his commandments. If he breaches the contract he is liable for punishment. Similar is the case, once you become a citizen of any country, you enter a contract with its laws. If you break the law you will be punished according to its rules and regulations no matter you like or dislike.

Likewise no one can force you to become a muslim. Its your free will. Similarly no country forces anyone to become its citizen.

Anything unclear do let me know.

QUESTION: No one can force someone to become a muslim. Its their free will. Similarly no country forces anyone to become its citizen. I believe this is true, but then again, one still has the option to leave and reside elsewhere. Change citizenship.
I am asking in hope to strengthen my iman, broaden my knowledge and at the same time prepare myself better in answering such questions.
When someone who is born a Muslim, is not forced but then again there is no option either. I am parallel with you on the matter that every Muslim is a soldier of Allah. It is true if for instance in your example,if a Malaysian soldier were caught being defect, it is fair that he is to be beheaded.I agree. I have come across this saying, a baby is born like a plain cloth metaphorically. The people around them, the parents or the guardian especially plays a huge role on how the kid will be brought up or how the design on the cloth would be. If a Muslim born child, is not really exposed to the teachings of Islam and then decides to renounce, how fair would you say the punishment is then?

Answer
Dear Brother,

Every child is born as a muslim as its Dine-fitra (The natural religion).

Its the external influence that makes him change his religion. However it does not entitle him/her to be killed.

Bukhari Volumn 006, Book 060, Hadith Number 298.
-----------------------------------------
Narated By Abu- Huraira : Allah's Apostle said, "No child is born except on Al-Fitra (Islam) and then his parents make him Jewish, Christian or Magian, as an animal produces a perfect young animal: do you see any part of its body amputated?" Then he recited:

"The religion of pure Islamic Faith (Hanifa),(i.e. to worship none but Allah), The pure Allah's Islamic nature with which He (Allah) has created mankind. Let There be no change in Allah's religion (i.e. to join none in Allah's worship). That is the straight religion; but most of men know not..." (30.30)
