Islam - Husband married a second wife

Expert: Ahmer - 11/7/2009

Question
My husband is on social benefit and he married a second wife is that allowed? We live in London and she is in Finland, they agree that he will see her when he can and only for 5 or 6 days every month? He wants her to come to London but he doesn't work. Is this marriage lawful to Alla's eye?

Answer
Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim (In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful)

Assalmalaikum

Dear Sister,

Social benefit is for those who are jobless. Your husband if he is able to work, then taking social benefit and being lazy is forbidden in islam.

Bukhari Volumn 002, Book 024, Hadith Number 508.
-----------------------------------------
Narated By Hakim bin Hizam : The Prophet said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand (i.e. he who gives in charity is better than him who takes it). One should start giving first to his dependents. And the best object of charity is that which is given by a wealthy person (from the money which is left after his expenses). And whoever abstains from asking others for some financial help, Allah will give him and save him from asking others, Allah will make him self-sufficient."

Bukhari Volumn 002, Book 024, Hadith Number 509.
-----------------------------------------
Narated By Ibn 'Umar : I heard Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) while he was on the pulpit speaking about charity, to abstain from asking others for some financial help and about begging others, saying, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is that of the giver and the lower (hand) is that of the beggar."

AS for his marriage he is free to marry anyone as long as he is just to all wives.
