Islam - how to persuade my husband to let me study and do a job.
Expert: Ahmer - 11/3/2009
Question I am a doctor, and want to pursue my career. for that i have to pass a couple of exams to become eligible for a job. I am a fresh graduate and don't have any kids right now, so i think this is the best time for me to study and pass my licensing exams before i can apply for job. Sadly my husband is not at all cooperative. He says that if i do a job i wont be able to manage the household and the kids. but we don't have any kids at the moment...and i want to use this time to the maximum, only if he is willing to cooperate. He himself is a doctor, but does not understand my desire for my career. I really want to pursue my career. My husband gets really aggressive when i try to persuade him. I don't know what to do. I love my husband and i don't want to loose him , but i also want to pursue my career. I want an advice in the light of Islamic teachings.

Dear Sister,
I am sorry but your husband is correct. As you will be much busy if you practice your profession the children will be left at the mercy of maids. However you can make an arrangement that you work only on your free time and you do not have to sacrifice your primary responsibilities.
[Quran 4:34] Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in the husband's absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband's property, etc.). As to those women on whose part you see illconduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great.
