Shahih Muslim Book 006, Hadith Number 2612.
Chapter : Excellence of the fast of Muharram.

Abu Huraira (RA) reported that he (the Messenger of Allah) was asked as to which prayer was most excellent after the prescribed prayer, and which fast was most excellent after the month of Ramadan. He said: prayer offered in the middle of the night and the most excellent fast after (fasting) in the month of Ramadan is the fast in God's month al-Muharram.

Shahih Muslim Book 006, Hadith Number 2528.
Chapter : On which day the fast is to be observed in Muharram.

Ibn 'Abbas reported that when the Messenger of Allah (SAW) fasted on the day of 'Ashura and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him: Messenger of Allah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When the next youar comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th But the Messenger of Allah (SAW died before the advent of the next youar.

Shahih Muslim Book 006, Hadith Number 2531.
Chapter : He who ate on the day of Ashuara should abstain (from eating) for the rest of the day (as a mark of respect).

Rubayyi' daughter of Mu'awwidh b. 'Afra' said that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) sent (a person) on the morning of Ashura to the villages of Ansar around Medina (with this message): He who got up in the morning fasting (without eating anything) he should complete his fast, and he who had had his breakfast in the morning, he should complete the rest of the day (without food). The Companions said; We henceforth observed fast on it (on the day of 'Ashura) and, God willing, made our children observe that. We went to the  and made toys out of wool for them and when anyone felt hungry and wept for food we gave them these toys till it was the time to break the fast.

Shahih Bukhari Volumn 003, Book 031, Hadith Number 116.
Narated By Ibn 'Umar (RA): The Prophet (SAW) observed the fast on the 10th of Muharram ('Ashura), and ordered (Muslims) to fast on that day, but when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, the fasting of the 'Ashura was abandoned. 'Abdullah did not use to fast on that day unless it coincided with his routine fasting by chance.

Shahih Bukhari Volumn 004, Book 055, Hadith Number 609.
Narated By Ibn 'Abbas (RA): When the Prophet (SAW) came to Medina, he found (the Jews) fasting on the day of 'Ashura' (i.e. 10th of Muharram). They used to say: "This is a great day on which Allah saved Moses and drowned the folk of Pharaoh. Moses observed the fast on this day, as a sign of gratitude to Allah." The Prophet (SAW) said, "I am closer to Moses than they." So, he observed the fast (on that day) and ordered the Muslims to fast on it.

Shahih Bukhari Volumn 005, Book 058, Hadith Number 172.
Narated By 'Aisha (RA): 'Ashura' (i.e. the 10th of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the Pre-Islamic period of ignorance. The Prophet (SAW) also used to fast on this day. So when he migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.
