Question
hi
i will be travelling to israel during september and will be going on a standard tour for 9 days. we would like to go 3/4 days earlier, hire a car and go to Eilat for that time. is it safe to travel from the airport to Eilat? Also, it looks like approximately 250km from the airport to Eilat - is this right and how long will it take us to travel there by car? are the roads good?

lastly, which areas in israel do you not recommend we travel to?

thanks for your assistance.

warm regards

stefan knipe

Answer
Hi Stefan ,

First of all welcome to Isreal .

Security Issue is irrelevant when going south if you  mean terrorism . the Israeli drivers on the other hand can be rude. It's about 340 kilometers from the airport to Eilat. Most of it on a good road part of it with limited lanes ( one to each side) it should take you between 4 and 5 hours ( including a stretching break ). Or a full day  if you travel there. Not too much chance to loose the way as it's a strait  line.

Eilat is a Beach resort and that's it .it a good departure point for one day tour to Petra ( Jordan ) or one day tour to St. Catherine ( Egypt ) Dolphins dive and snorkeling .

If you are not going to travel along the way it might be better to fly there ( approx. 160$ per person ) then to driver a car. As I do not know where your organized tour is taking you it's hard to make recommendations. It's recommend to travel anywhere in Israel. I would avoid traveling on my own in the west bank territories without knowing exactly where I am going. some places are not friendly to walk at night , but not more then any central capital cities on the world .

Bon Voyage
Noam
