Question
Dear Maria,

Thank you, once again, for your answer to my previous question about the use of the passive si and modal verbs.  Would you please tell me if I have correctly translated the following excerpt from this answer:

Vedi anche per esempio: “Da quella terrazza si poteva vedere un panorama splendido” che in realtŕ equivale alla normale forma passiva “Da quella terrazza poteva essere visto un panorama splendido”, frase che tuttavia risulta essere meno scorrevole, e quindi meno stilisticamente apprezzabile, del “si passivante” usato in “Da quella terrazza si poteva vedere un panorama splendido”.

See also for example: “Da quella terrazza si poteva vedere un panorama splendido” that in fact is equivalent to the normal passive form “Da quella terrazza poteva essere visto un panorama splendido”, sentence that nevertheless results to be less fluent, and therefore less stylistically appreciable, than the “passive si” used in “Da quella terrazza si poteva vedere un panorama splendido”.

Would you also please tell me if the sentences  - “Da quella terrazza si poteva vedere un panorama splendido” and “Da quella terrazza poteva essere visto un panorama splendido” are correctly translated into English as:
“A magnificent panorama used to be seen from that terrace.”

Thank you very much.  I very, very much appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

your first translation is correct.

As for the sentence “Da quella terrazza si poteva vedere un panorama splendido” , it translates as :” From that terrace we could see a magnificent panorama” or “From that terrace one could see a magnificent panorama” as well as “From that terrace you could see a magnificent panorama”, while the literal translation of  “Da quella terrazza poteva essere visto un panorama splendido” sounds as follows:“A magnificent panorama could be seen from that terrace”.

Kind regards,
Maria
