Question
Dear Maria,

Can you please help me with the following sentence:

Quotò delle azioni in Borsa.
He quoted some shares on the Stock Exchange.

I was wondering if it is mandatory for the word “delle” (some) to be included in this sentence.

Would it be also correct to say:

Quotò azioni in Borsa.
He quoted shares on the Stock Exchange.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

in Italian you cannot say “Quotò azioni in Borsa”, but you must say “Quotò delle azioni in Borsa”  as it is mandatory to use the partitive article “delle” in the feminine plural related to the feminine plural noun “azioni”.

Such a partitive indicates  a part as distinct from a whole.

See also:

“Comprò delle azioni di risparmio “ ; “Vendette delle azioni quotate in Borsa”, etc.

Best regards,
Maria
