Question
Dear Maria,

Can you please tell me if both of the following sentences can be used to say – “The boys love their mother”

[1]   I bambini vogliono bene alla madre.
  The boys love their mother.

[2]   I bambini vogliono bene alla loro madre.
  The boys love their mother.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

both of the sentences that you mention can be used to say – “The boys love their mother”.
In Italian, in fact, we can say either “I bambini vogliono bene alla madre”, without the possessive which is implied, or “I bambini vogliono bene alla loro madre” with the possessive.

Best,

Maria
