Question
Dear Maria,

Would you please tell me if the following sentences are correct or not:

Io sono nel parco. =  I am in the park.

Io sono nel parco.  =  I am at the park.

Io sono al parco.  -  I am in the park.

Io sono al parco.  =  I am at the park.

I am trying to make sure that I understand the use and the translation of the prepositions “in” and “a” in these sentences.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

in Italian we can say indifferently “Io sono al parco” or “Io sono nel parco”, according to the context where these sentences are.

For example, we can say either :”Ero al parco, quando seppi della tua  partenza” or ”Ero nel parco, quando seppi della tua  partenza”; "Non posso venire subito da te, perché sono nel parco” or "Non posso venire subito da te, perché sono al parco”, etc.

As for English, I'm sorry, but my knowledge about the use of the prepositions “in” and “at”  is not so good  and then I do not able to tell you whether you can use them indifferently like in Italian in the sentences “Io sono al parco” or “Io sono nel parco”.

Kind regards,

Maria
