Italian Language/Passive Voice

Question
Dear Maria,

Would you please tell me if I have correctly used the following sentence in the passive voice:

“Ho stato servito moltissimo dalla tua risposta.”
(I was served very much by your answer)

Would you please also tell me if I am correct to think that the passive voice can only be formed by use of a transitive verb in Italian.    And, that therefore, the past participle “servito” in the above sentence comes from the transitive verb “servire”.

Thank you very, very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

Sorry, but your use of the intransitive verb “servire” in the  passive voice  is absolutely wrong simply because in Italian we can use  the passive voice of “servire” only when it is in the transitive form as in e.g.  “Il pranzo è stato servito alle 13”, “Molti clienti  sono già stati serviti dai commessi”, “La cena sarà servita alle 20”, “La periferia della città è servita dalla metropolitana”, “In quel piccolo bar vengono serviti ottimi aperitivi”, etc.

As for  the past participle “servito” , it can be used either in the passive voice (see above) or in the active voice as for example in “Si congedò, dopo aver servito a lungo nell’esercito”, “Ho servito Dio per tutta la mia vita”, “Avendo servito in quella famiglia per lunghi anni, la cuoca decise di licenziarsi”, etc.

To conclude, I have to tell you that both “Ho stato servito moltissimo dalla tua risposta” and “Sono stato servito moltissimo dalla tua risposta” are  absolutely wrong as the only correct sentence would be  “La tua risposta mi è servita moltissimo“.

Best regards,

Maria
