Question
QUESTION: Dear Maria,

Would you please tell me if the following sentence is correct or not:
“Grazie del tuo aiuto con questa un’altra domanda riguardo a pronomi personali tonici.”

I am trying to write the following:
“Thank you for your help with this follow-up question about stressed pronouns.

I am having a very difficult time trying to express "follow-up question" in Italian.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

ANSWER: Dear Rich,

First of all I have to tell you that in my last answer  I’ve omitted to list as incorrect the sentence “Sei molto gentile a spiegarmi questo concetto e non a lui” which should  be “Sei molto gentile a spiegare questo concetto a me,  e non a lui”, where there is an emphasis on “a me” and “a lui”, according to what I’ve already explained to you.

As for the correct translation for  “Thank you for your help with this follow-up question about stressed pronouns”, it  translates correctly as “Grazie del tuo aiuto con quest ’altra domanda sui  pronomi personali tonici” (not, “questa un’altra” and “a pronomi”).

It would be better, however, to say:”Grazie di avermi aiutato rispondendo a questa mia ulteriore domanda sui pronomi personali tonici”.

Please note that the English expression “follow-up question”  can be translated  into Italian as “ulteriore domanda”, “domanda supplementare” , “domanda di approfondimento”, “un’altra domanda” ,according to the context.

For example we would say: ”Vorrei farti una domanda di approfondimento sul tema in questione”, “Potrei farti un’ulteriore  domanda ?”, “Avrei da porti una domanda supplementare”, “Hai tempo per un’altra domanda?”.

Best regards,

Maria

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Dear Maria,

Thank you very much for your help with this question.  I was hoping you would not mind helping me some more with the following questions.

If -  “un’altra domanda” means - “follow-up question” can you please explain why one cannot say:
Grazie del tuo aiuto con questa un’altra  domanda sui  pronomi personali tonici.
Thank you for your help with this follow-up question about stressed pronouns.

I am also having a very difficult time understanding - “quest’altra domanda”

Can you please tell me if  “quest’altra” has some type of special meaning?   I have learned in the past that the adjective “altro” has a special meaning when used with the indefinite article as in “un altro” and “un ultra” which both mean “another”.   I was wondering if -  “quest’altro” and “quest’altra” also have a special meaning.

Or, should I just translate “quest’altra domanda” as “this other question”

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

it is true that “un’altra domanda” means “a follow-up question”, but “un’altra” cannot be preceded by the demonstrative adjective “questa” as in your translation ”Grazie del tuo aiuto con questa un’altra  domanda sui  pronomi personali tonici” whose correct form would be ”Grazie del tuo aiuto con quest’altra  domanda sui  pronomi  personali tonici” ( Thank you for your help with this follow-up question about stressed pronouns), since " this follow-up question" translates correctly as "quest’altra  domanda", not "questa un’altra  domanda".

In short, “quest’altra domanda” corresponds to “this (questa) follow-up (altra) question (domanda)” and therefore, as you can see, “quest’altra” has no  special meaning, but is the translation of  “this follow-up” when “follow-up” refers to a question that one asks after asking another question.

Anyway, you could also  translate “quest’altra domanda” as “this other question”.

Best regards,

Maria
