Italian Language/Essere or Facere

Question
Please would you tell me which is correct, or more correct - to use essere or facere when indicating a job or profession.
Sono un medico
Faccio un medico

Grazie!

Answer
Hello,

You can either say “Sono un medico” or “Faccio il medico” since we can use the verb “essere” as well as the verb “fare”(not “facere” which is wrong) when we are indicating a job or profession.

Anyway, you must use the indefinite article “un”/”una” when using the verb “essere”, and the definite article “il”/”lo”/"la" when using the verb “fare”.

See for example:”Faccio l’avvocato” and  “Sono un avvocato”; “Era un ingegnere” and “Faceva l’ingegnere”; “Sono un architetto” and "Faccio l’architetto”, "Sono un'avvocatessa" and "Faccio l'avvocatessa",etc.

Best regards,

Maria
