Question
Dear Maria,

Can you please tell me if the word “piattaforma” is used to refer to the platform at a railroad train station.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

the word “piattaforma” is not used to refer to the platform at a railroad train station.

In fact, we call “marciapiede” or “binario”  the platform at a railroad train station where people get on and off trains.

See for example:”Il prossimo treno per Roma partirà dal marciapiede 3 “  or  “Il prossimo treno per Roma partirà dal binario 3” (The next train for Roma will depart from platform 3).

Kind regards,

Maria
