Question
Dear Maria,

Would you please tell me if the following sentence is correct or not:
“Io non ti posso mai ringraziare abbastanza per tutto quanto del tuo aiuto eccellente!”

I am trying to write the following:
“I can never thank you enough for all of your excellent help.”

Thank you very, very much.

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

sorry, but you should have written correctly :” Non ti posso mai ringraziare abbastanza per tutto il tuo eccellente  aiuto”(literal) or better: “Non potrò mai ringraziarti abbastanza per l’eccellente aiuto che mi offri”.

Please note that “…per tutto quanto del tuo aiuto eccellente”- which is wrong in Italian-  is nothing but a literal translation of “for all of your excellent help”.

In short, Italian and English have their own peculiarities, as I’ve often said, so that what in English is correct can be wrong in Italian.

All the best,

Maria
