Question
Dear Maria,

Can you please help me to understand the use of the idiomatic expression:  “fare retromarcia” (to reverse).

Is “fare retromarcia” only used to talk about driving an automobile or some other vehicle in reverse?

Would you please give me some example sentences to study that illustrate the use “fare retromarcia”

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

the idiomatic expression “fare retromarcia” (to reverse) is used to talk about driving an automobile as well as some other vehicle in reverse.

Such an expression can however be used in a figurative sense too,  as in e.g. “Quando si è di fronte all'ignoto, la maggior parte di noi preferisce far retromarcia e tornare indietro"( Of course, when faced with the unknown, most of us prefer to reverse and go back).

So, here are some example sentences  that illustrate the use of  “fare retromarcia":

Hope this can be helpful to you.

Best regards,

Maria
