Question
QUESTION: Dear Maria,

Can you please tell me if it is acceptable to use a “complemento” to refer to the color of gold as in saying - “il colore dell’oro”.

Can you also please tell me if it is acceptable to refer to the color of gold as  -  “il giallo oro”.

Can you  please tell me if it is acceptable to use a “complemento” to refer to the color of silver as in saying  - “il colore dell’argento”.

It would help me very much if you would also please tell me if the following sentences are correct or not:

Le piace il colore dell’oro.
She likes gold.   (where “gold” is a color used as a noun)

Le piace il giallo oro.
She likes gold.     (where  “gold” is a color used as a noun)

Le piace il colore dell’argento.
She likes silver.     (where  “silver” is a color used as a noun)

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

ANSWER: Dear Rich,

it is acceptable to use a “complemento di specificazione” to refer to the color of gold as in saying - “il colore dell’oro” where "dell'oro" is just a "complemento di specificazione" as it specifies the color of this metal.

Also, it is acceptable to refer to the color of gold as  -  “il giallo oro”.

Moreover, it is acceptable to use a “complemento di specificazione” to refer to the color of silver as in saying  - “il colore dell’argento” where "dell'argento" is just a "complemento di specificazione" as it specifies the color of this metal.

Lastly, the following sentences are correct:

"Le piace il colore dell’oro" ("She likes gold", where “gold” is a color used as a noun)

"Le piace il giallo oro" ("She likes gold", where  “gold” is a color used as a noun)

"Le piace il colore dell’argento" (She likes silver", where  “silver” is a color used as a noun).

Kind regards,

Maria

il color del blu
blue
where “blue” is a color used as a noun

il color dell’arancione
orange
where “orange” is a color used as a noun

il color del rosso
red
where red is a color used as a noun

il color del bronzo
bronze
where “bronze”  is a color used as a noun

il color del marrone
brown
where “brown” is a color used as a noun

il color del grigio
gray
where “gray” is a color used as a noun

il color del viola
purple
where “purple”  is a color used as a noun

il color del giallo

where  “yellow” is a color used as a noun

il color del verde
green
where “green”  is a color used as a noun

etc

etc

Thank you very, very much.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

such a system of "complementi di specificazione" as in "il colore dell'oro" or "il colore dell'argento" and "il colore del bronzo" is acceptable only when we are talking about metals and we are indicating their color, but it is not acceptable to use this system of "complementi"  to refer to any color in Italian.

For example, you must say:

Maria
