Question
Dear Maria,

Would you please tell me if the following sentence is correct:

“Non dimenticare chiudere a chiave la portiera.”
Don’t forget to lock the car door.

Would you please tell me if I am correct to have used the transitive form of the verb (dimenticare) in this sentence  (and not the pronominal form -   “dimenticarsi”).

Would you also please tell me if I am correct in thinking that “chiudere a chiave la portiera” is classified as a “proposizioni oggettive” (infinitive phrase acting s a direct object).

Thank you very much.  As always, I very much appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich,

the correct sentence is :“Non dimenticare di  chiudere a chiave la portiera” where the transitive verb “dimenticare” governs an infinitive and then must be followed by the preposition “di”.
See also:”Ha dimenticato di venire a casa mia”; “Dimenticai di avvisarlo”; “Dimenticò di avermi detto che sarebbe venuto a trovarmi”; etc.

In short, it is correct to use  the transitive form “dimenticare” in this sentence, but you could also have used  the pronominal form  “dimenticarsi” and say:” Non dimenticarti di  chiudere a chiave la portiera”.
Similarly, you could say:”Si è dimenticato di venire a casa mia”; “Mi dimenticai di avvisarlo”; “Si dimenticò di avermi detto che sarebbe venuto a trovarmi”; etc.

As for  “chiudere a chiave la portiera”, it  is classified as a “proposizione oggettiva” (infinitive phrase acting s a direct object).

Best regards,

Maria
