Italy - Late Auguat in Italy

Expert: Andrew Smith - 3/14/2008

Question
I made plans to travel to Italy in late August / early September, after I made my plans I was told that everything "closes down" at that time of the year. I was told most shops and restuarants close for vacation. Is this correct?

Answer
Hi Phil

It depends where you are going. The holiday places around the coast are in full swing during that period and everything is open. In the big cities in the north of Italy, cities like Milan and Turin, a lot of things are closed as most of the people are away.

I wouldn't worry about it much unless you are visiting the two cities mentioned and mainly for shopping. I actually like Milan and Turin in August as they are far less crowded and pleasant and you can still always find a decent restaurant - it just needs a little more looking.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need anything else.

Andrew
