Italy - rome to florence and back!

Expert: Edoardo - 11/2/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hello! How can I go from Rome to Florence and back? I was thinking by train? But is there a cheapest or more efficient way?How much will this cost per person for the round trip?
thank you very much!

ANSWER: Hello,
the train is the best solution. It goes fast and it is relatively unexpensive.
It costs 80 Euro roundtrip, 120 Euro if you take 1st class. Per person.
If you are more then 2/3 people I'd suggest a private transfer which might be cheaper if you calculate the cost per person (around 500 Euro total roundtrip).

Have fun,
Edoardo

QUESTION: thank you very much for your reply!
the thing is that as i saw from internet , there are quite a few different trains and companies. which one should i prefer?is there a specific link? and should i book tickets in advance from the internet ot is it ok if i buy them from rome?

Answer
Hello,
in Italy we only have Trenitalia, the official Italian Railway company.
The trains are divided in:

IC (Inter City): they are cheaper but they are slower than the High Speed.
AV (Alta Velocità / formerly ES: Euro Star): they are the fastest but more expensive.
CIS (Cisalpino); that costs like a IC, so it is cheap, but the speed and the lenght of time is the same as the high speed. What's the trick? It is a Suisse Company, so like all the Suisse things, they can be way much more efficient than us.
So these labels all belong to trains of the TRENITALIA, they are just different kind of trains.
You don't have to book per time (unless we are talking about Christmas or NY's eve. You can just show up at the station and make the ticket at the self service machines, 10 minutes.

Have fun,
Edoardo
