Question Dear Lisa, we are planning our honeymoon holiday in the end of August (25-29th) and we are flying from Sofia to Treviso airport with Wizz Air. Can you tell me how to reach Venice, as our apartment is near St. Mark Square? There is a bus service and then vaporetti - should we use this road? Also will we need public transportation a lot(water buses), so that we buy day tickets, provided that we do like to walk. I mean are all places in the city available on foot? And last... sorry to bother you that much - which places in Venice are a must to be seen?
Answer Hi Teddy,
Venice is one of my favorite places on earth. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
There is bus service that will take you to Venice. From the bus station, it's a short walk to the vaporetto (public water bus). If you want to splurge, there is a water taxi at the airport that will take you either right to your hotel or very close to it. My daughter and I did this once and it was fabulous! It costs about $100.
Venice is the sort of place where you will do a lot of walking. You can walk everywhere and it is advisable. We did take the vaporetto one day to save time, but then we walked back. You will rarely need to take the vaporetto, so I wouldn't bother getting a pass.
The must sees are the sites around St. Marks Square: the cathedral, the Doges Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the Tower. Do take the elevator up the Tower. The view is wonderful. Also, cross the Rialto Bridge, visit the original ghetto (especially if you're Jewish or have any interest in Jewish history), and take a day to visit Murano, Burano and Torchello. Have a drink at Harry's Bar, but don't eat there unless you're loaded with euros. The prices are not to be believed.
Find and check out the Palazzo del Bovolo. It's one of the most beautiful buildings in Venice but not easy to find.
