Question
Hi Lisa,
Is it safe to leave suitcases in the trunk of our rental car in order to see smaller towns as we drive between the bigger ones. For example, driving from Rome to Siena, we'd like to stop and walk around the smaller towns. Thanks!

Danielle

Answer
Hi Danielle. I would think that it's safe in smaller towns if your things are out of sight. It's usually a good idea not to leave your car unattended but the smaller towns are a safer bet. Keep things you absolutely can't do without on your person, such as meds, passport, camera, and money. And leave the jewelry at home. If you're really nervous, try to leave your car in a lot, a well-traveled street, pay someone a few bucks to watch it, or leave it where you can see it.

Another thought is you can buy a cable lock and lock your suitcases together and/or to the frame of the car.

And last, the cars in Italy are small. Bring small suitcases or you won't be able to put them in the trunk.

Best wishes,
Lisa
