Italy - traveling from Firenze to Montalcino

Expert: Edoardo - 6/9/2009

Question
Ciao Edoardo,

I am Syracuse University student studying in Firenze for several weeks.  I'm eager to visit Montalcino for either a day trip or overnight.  I'm looking for the most economical way to make the trip.  I am having trouble finding the best solution.  What can you Suggest?

I am OK with hostels and renting a vehicle if it should be necessary.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Anthony

Answer
Hello,
from what I know there are no direct buses from Florence to Montalcino.
The cheapest thing you could do is taking the Rapida Bus from Florence to Siena (9.10 --> 10.25) and then take a connection with the bus to Montalcino (10.53 ---> 12.00). PLease note that the arrival in Siena (La Lizza) is different from the departure of the bus to Montalcino (PORTA OVILE) so you should either walk there (1 mile) or take bcity bus number 2 from where you will be arrived. The problem is not the Florence-Siena leg, as there's a bus every hour or so, but the leg from Montalcino to Siena that is not very well connected by bus (train doesn't arrive there). Last bus is at 13.30.
So the best way would probably make a combination between public and private transportation.
You can take the bus in the morning  and then have someone picking you up in late afternoon in Montalcino (1 hour drive and 80 Euro expense to Siena where you'll take the bus back to Florence, or 150 Euro to Florence directly).

Have fun,
Edoardo
