About Valerie
Expertise
I can answer questions about Rome, especially in providing advice for first time travelers to the Eternal City. I`d love to provide information on getting around, ordering meals, finding a hotel, and roaming the streets of this magnificent city...the "nitty gritty" basics everyone needs to know to take the confusion out their first visit.

Experience
I was a corporate travel consultant for 3 years, and involved in various aspects of travel arranging, as a travel agent and then agency marketing manager for 7 years. I have traveled to Rome many times, and remember well the confusion of arriving jet-lagged on my first visit.

Question
Hello Valerie,

I am researching a possible facton of the city of Rome with the spelling "Oruiedo".  My father-in-law's obituary states that he was born in "Oruiedo, Roma, Italy".  I will be visiting Rome in the near future and would like to know if such a place exists.  I have been unable to find any reference to it, or the possibility of other spellings on the internet.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Anne,
My closest guess would be that it is referring to Orvieto.  This town is not in the province of Roma though, but Terni, in Umbria.  But my experience from tracing my family history is that mispellings and other errors in communicating the origins are common.  Do you have a birth record or marriage license which may help determine the place name?  I found a lot of records through the Family History Library (at the local Mormon church) and through Ellis Island (www.ellisisland.org).

But the spelling - to me - would indicate Orvieto...it's the closest match.

Best of luck tracking it down!  If you have other questions, feel free to let me know.

Valerie
