Jaguar Repair/Copper washers on valve cover

Question
Howard,
When I inquired regarding the cracked valve cover you stated I needed to check the copper washers.
What am I checking them for....?
Thanks
David

Answer
To see if all the nuts have a washer under them. I usually anneal them by heating them with a propane torch while on the end of a coat hanger size wire and dropping them into cold water. This softens the copper and swells it up again so they will seal again. Copper gets hard when compressed and will not seal well. Careful, as you can't tighten those nuts very tight or it will damage the cam cover.
