Question My fiancé and I are hoping to go to Couples Negril next July for our honeymoon. However we were slightly worried about the time of year we will be there. I have heard conflicting reports about the climate, although most say that July should be fine in Jamaica -very hot with the occasional thunderstorm that won't last very long. From your experience would you say that was true?
Would you recommend Couples Negril resort? What is the beach like at Bloody Bay, is it over-crowded?
Also the other worry we had was that it is very closely situated to Hedonism II and other 'louder, party-like' resorts. Do you think we're likely to be disturbed by other things going on in the resorts nearby?
One other question - we were curious what the crime levels are like. Is it possible to walk around outside your resort, or is it advisable not to? We tend to like to go for a stroll in the evenings after dinner - are there places to do this near Couples Negril?
Answer Hi Fleur:
Couple Negril
Couples Negril is a wonderful spot for a honeymoon. You're sure to love it. It does have a wonderful beach. Pretty white sand and crystal clear waters. It is summer - which is prime vacation time. However, since guests tend to use the beach directly in front of their own resort, they beaches are unlikely to be crowded.
Each resort is totally private so you're unlikely to be disturmed by guests at Hedonism II or any other resort for that matter.
The Weather
You can expect the temperature to be 82-90 degrees with perhaps a few quick showers. Gentle trade winds keep the temperature quite pleasant.
Safety
Jamaica is the 3rd largest island in the Caribbean, and the largest in the English-speaking Caribbean. This means it is much more than a beach. It has an economy independent of tourism - although tourism is perhaps the most important - and by the same token, the major cities (like most large cities) have periodic incidents of crime.
That said, the main tourist areas are generally fine and visitors should observe the same common sense behaviour they would observe in any large city. For example, don't go shopping with or overtly display large wads of cash, flashy jewelley etc. This is no different from the precautions that you would normally employ on a visit to Europe, or any major U.S. city.
Jamaica is a country of great natural beauty, and has much to offer in terms of sightseeing, shopping, and its people. If you stay in Negril, a visit to Ricks Cafe is an absolute must to watch the most spectacular sunset - which by all accounts, is not to be missed.
Negril is work in progress, though so you may not find a lot of street lights, etc. so for a quiet stroll after dinner, I'd perhaps stroll around the resort. Perhaps you could substitute morning strolls along the beach. From Couples Negril, you can walk along the beach, past several other resorts. It's a nice quite time and you'll find only a couple of other early birds on the beach at that time.
