Question In the 1950s, I was stationed on Shimo Koshiki Shima, a small island off the West
coast of Kyushu. I'd like to revisit it. I'm looking for help in finding what
it's like today, how to get there, and anything about accommodations. At the
time, there was a daily ferry from the small town of Sendai. I'd like to spend a
few days also around Kyushu."
Answer Hi,
I have never been there, but I know there is still ferry service to the island, as well as the other Koshiki Islands.
Sendai is now Satsumasendai, which is the original Sendai and several surrounding towns swallowed up together. The ferry leaves from Ichikikushikino. From their website there is an e-mail address info@city.ichikikushikino.lg.jp and you might be able to get more specific info by asking them, or at the Japan National Tourist Org page at www.jnto.go.jp
An excellent way to see Kyushu is thru a JR-Kyushu Rail Pass which allows you to travel all over the island by rail for one up front price. See http://japanrailpass.net
There are also cheap flights for getting to Kyushu from Tokyo or other Japanese cities, such as the JAL Yokoso or Welcome to Japan fare, which is more than 50% off regular
Japan domestic airfare prices.
