About Chiaki
Expertise
I am a Japanese living in Tokyo for more than 10 years. I like eating out here, trying new products and visiting new places in Tokyo, so I can be your help in these things. I am also very good at searching web. Japanese web sites are often very poor in their English contents, so I can check original contents for you, if you take time in reading Japanese. I had lived in UK for a year, so perhaps I can explain Japanese things comparing with western things.

Experience
I welcomed friends from overseas several times as a Tokyo resident. They enjoyed Sushi dinner and hopping of stylish bars.

Education/Credentials

Japan - Shinto/Torii gate question

Expert: Chiaki - 6/11/2004

Question
Hello I hope you can help me :)
I was given a little Torii gate as a gift to help me meditate. It has chimes hanging in the "doorway" is this ok or should I remove them?
I know the door is open for a reason so should there be anything allowed to hang there?
Thank you ever so !

Michelle

Answer
Dear Michelle,
Thank you very much for your question and your interest in Japan.

If you're interested in real Toriis, please have a look at this:
http://homepage2.nifty.com/butuUkai/torii/lab1.1.htm

I also found a sample image of souvenir Torii here:

I think that it's no problem for your Torii to have chimes under the doorway of it, so you can keep that as it is.
Please don't worry about it.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me again.

Yours,

chiaki
