Japanese Culture - protocol with Japanese guests

Question
The mother of our son's girlfriend is in the US visiting from Japan. She speaks no English. Her daughter speaks some. Our son speaks fluent Japanese. We are to meet her in a few days and think she may become a future in-law. Should we invite her to our home, and if so, what should we serve? Or should we offer to buy her dinner at a restaurant? What would be the most gracious?

Answer
Not knowing the mother is difficult, but I think a dinner at home would be the best option here because it's the most personal. I'm not quite what would be a good dish to serve, however I would stay away from traditional Japanese foods simply because it may NOT be quite right and you risk trouble there. Also, she may be interested in trying real American foods, so have a couple of options. Could you ask the daughter if she likes chicken or beef better? Something like that will help. Good luck!
