Question Hello! At the start of this year I had great luck in meeting a really wonderful Japanese woman. We've become close friends and our little girls even love to play with each other. Our husbands are both in the military so our families have moved around quite a bit. She's often expressed to me how hard it is to live in the United States and that many people have a hard time understanding her or even showing her respect. I really, really appreciate her and I love having her as my friend. I'd love to give her a gift (especially for Christmas-if it is acceptable) but I'm not sure where to start. I would LOVE for it to be something very special and something traditionally Japanese. Is there a special gift the Japanese might give to show their friendship? Or maybe a necklace, bracelet, or other item with the character for friend/friendship would be appropriate? I've looked online for ideas and I can't seem to find anything! I want her to know that I appreciate her and I appreciate where she came from. Any ideas or suggestions would be wonderful!! Thank you so much!
Answer Without knowing the inidividual, this can be difficult. However, if you want to give her a traditional Japanese gift, I would suggest something small and simple. If you're not sure she celebrates Christmas, your best bet would be to give a News Years gift instead (it's not much farther away anyhow). New Years in Japan is usually the biggest family holiday. As for the gift, look into things that are symbols for good luck/fortune, happiness, or good health. It can be a traditional Japanese door hanger of sorts, or my personal favorite is a framed piece of art. There are framed Japanese poetry that make great gifts. One poem I think would fit well for you is: "Meeting by chance: The best would be if even one person from the bottom of his/her heart said, "I am so glad to have met you."
Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the poet and I cannot read the name on the poem (it's all in Japanese obviously). However, the poet is famous in Japan and perhaps you will find it if you're interested. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck and have a great Christmas!
