Question
Now that I know how to pronounce my kitties' names, I am delighted with the sound of Ayame, but not as happy with Chuurippu.  Could you suggest some flower names in Japanese that have a prettier sound as I am considering a name change for this pretty girl.  Thanks again!

Answer
Hello,

I'll list off some common flowers for you:

'Rose' is 'bara' (bah-rah).

'Daffodil' is 'suisen' (soo-ee-sen; more like 'swee-sen' in normal rapid speech).

'Peony' is 'botan' (boh-tahn).

'Poppy' is 'keshi' (keh-shee).

'Lily' is 'sayuri' (sah-yuh-ree).

'Dandelion', even though it is technically a weed, has an adorable name in Japanese: 'tanpopo' (tan-poh-poh).

Then there is always 'sakura' (sah-koo-rah), named after the beautiful pink cherry blossom!

Hope that helps! Let me know what you decide, or if you want me to make up a more extensive list.

Expertise

I have been teaching myself the language for the past seven years, having consistent practice with Japanese materials. I can help translate things from English to Japanese or vice versa. I can also help you get started if you're planning on taking up the language. =) I'm most familiar with things like anime, manga, J-pop, games and so on.

Experience

I began learning the language in 1999. I frequently talk with penpals and natives in Japan, as well as continually keep up practicing with authentic Japanese materials.
