Question
I was just wondering what "Anata" truly meant?
I watched a couple of J-dramas and it's used as and endearment of some sort towards the wife/husband but doesn't anata mean "you" in a rude way?
how is anata used?

Answer
Hi,

Anata does mean you, however, the meaning can change varying on the situation. Between couples, it can mean "dear", between strangers, it does mean 'you', however usage of the term is discouraged, it would be politer to ask the persons name and then refer to them accordingly: firstname-san, if they are Japanese, then last name (family name) +san

I hope that helps answer your question.

Ayu
