Expert: John Riemer Date: 1/25/2007 Subject: Jazz in Europe
Question Hi, I'm in the middle of an essay on Jazz in Europe and I'm just looking for some advice on where I can get info for the history of jazz in Europe?any help would be great. Thank You
Answer Hello,
The influence of jazz from Europe is somewhat limited. Many US years emigrated because of a more lenient racial view. My experience as a jazz guitarist was heavily influenced by Django Reinhart. I would start there. One sideman he played with was violinist Stephen Grapelly.
Billy Taylor has a site that might help ...http://town.hall.org/radio/Kennedy/Taylor/bt_euro.html
Nicolas Slonimsky was a classical player but he wrote a bit that influenced many jazz players (Thesaurus of Scales and Patterns)John Coltrane is said to have studied his book.
I hope this helps a bit.
Regards,
John
