Question I lost the key fob to my 03 jeep grand cherokee laredo and just received a replacement. do you know how i can program it or does this NEED to be done by the dealer? are their any programming sites for the blk remote?
Answer Hi Yogi,
Is it just the remote, for the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) system? Or do you have a key to program as well? You see, the vehicle has RKE with the remotes, and SKIS (Sentry Key Immobilizer System) for the keys -- which is just a tiny transmitter embedded into the body of the key. Most people get confused when it comes to this, so forgive me for sounding patronizing.
If it's a key, and you have 2 operational ones currently, there is a method to do it using just the ignition switch:
1. Insert key #1 and turn ignition ON, wait 5 seconds, and turn it off
2. Immediately insert key #2, turn ignition ON and wait for 10 seconds -- the SKIS indicator should start blinking.
3. Insert NEW key, and turn ignition ON -- once the SKIS light stops flashing, your new key is programmed.
-- ignore this, or file it away for future reference, if you didn't want this; most people that lose FOBs also lose the key with it --
The color of the remotes only has to do with differentiating between the two drivers. For example, my black remote coordinates with the memory functions of the seat and mirrors, set to my preference (on the drivers door). The grey one is set for my wifes' preference. Which is good, since we are two entirely different sizes!
Unfortunately, as for the RKE system, you need a DRBIII scantool (or STARscan) to program the FOBs. If you are a good customer at the local Jeep dealer, then they may do it for free, especially if you buy the FOB there. However, there are a few around that are short on customer service, and might charge you for it. Sad, since it takes literally less than a minute, and they might gain a customer for it.
